There are a lot of things a student can do in Bristol. There is always some activity being planned in this city, where you can go and meet new people and make new friends.
Oxford University consists of a federation of more than 40 self-managed colleges and permanent private halls. Students can only become a student of the University if they are first accepted by a college or hall, and each college manages its own admissions policies.
In the beginning, most students and scholars lived in academic halls that were set up as halls of residence by enterprising businessmen. During the 13th century true colleges were set-up, with their own statutes and governing body. Even more important, these early institutions benefited from generous endowments of money and land from their rich benefactors.
There is harsh rivalry between the colleges, and this can be noticed in both academic and sporting achievement. Each year, a table called “the Norrington table” ranks Oxford colleges in order of academic excellence, with colleges scoring points according to the level of performance of their undergraduates in that year's Final Examination.
SHOPPING
Broad Street
If students want to go out for shopping, they will certainly have a lot to choose from in this lively city. There´s is something for everyone, for the most sophisticated of tastes and all budgets from pocket money to big spenders.
This street is where students can find various art and bookshops including the world-famous and compelling Blackwells. There are also a range of gift-shops and Broad Street is where the Oxford Information Centre can be found.
Oxford offers an extensive range of shops. At the end of Queen Street lays The Westgate. This is a modern shopping complex. Further shopping centres are found at the Clarendon Centre (between Queen Street and Cornmarket), and the Golden Cross arcade next to the famous Covered Market. Not very far away you can find the recently redeveloped Gloucester Green, next to the bus station, where a weekly fresh produce market is held. Many of the shops at the Clarendon Centre are no longer there, along with the mirrored ceiling, which gave the indoor shopping streets a sense of openness and height (quite a unique feature for an indoor centre).
PARKS
There are a lot of parks where lots and lots of (international) students go to to relax and to enjoy the natural environment. They are also a very good way to read, whether it is in your study book or not!
The University Parks consist of about 70 acres (30 hectares) of parkland on the west bank of the River Cherwell, together with a 4 acre (1.5 hectare) stretch of land going down towards the south. The parks lie between the upper and lower levels of the river and is therefore traditionally known as Mesopotamia.
A total of 91 acres (37 hectares) of land for the Parks was bought by the University from Merton College over an eleven-year period from 1853, and of this area, four acres (1.5 hectares) were used for the University Museum which has been completed in 1860. Between 1912 and the early 1950s, a further portion was taken over for buildings in the University Science Area.
In June 1863, the University was presented with a plan for the Parks by Mr. James Bateman of Magdalen College. However, this was rejected and in 1865 the University spent £500 for buying trees and shrubs. The Reverend Thomas Hopkins, Curator, directed the first plantings which were carried out under supervision of Mr. William Baxter, then Superintendent of the University Botanic Garden. Many trees listed were exotic species, very few of which now survive. Further major tree planting was carried out in 1888 and in the 1920s and 1950s. More recently, since 1977, many young trees have been planted. While these have little impact on the landscape at present, they will ensure interest and pleasure for future generations of visitors.
