Escape: 9a High St (above Covered Market Ave. 1), Tel: 248480, Mon-Sat 5pm-late. Relatively new, Escape is the most recent and truly central trendy bar. The do-good food and danceable music. The have big leather chairs and swanky lighting; it has quite an oriental touch to it. It’s located up a passageway into the Covered Market. Happy hour till 9pm.
Mishmash @ East Oxford Community Centre: Princes Street (off Cowley Rd), Fri 8ish-11pm. The name is of a particular night rather than of the venue. The East Oxford community has been a private members club. Mishmash is a friendly, cosy place where to listen to reggae & dub. The decks are available to anyone who feels like playing 3 tracks (of any genre) that they've brought with them. A notable feature is the ace decoration by the resident backdrop artist. Reggae, dub & other nights often append midweek in the same venue, alongside the occasional benefit night for a good cause. This is a venue loaded with charisma, check it out.
Merton's Bar:73 High Street, Tel: 249065, Mon-Sat 11am-2am, Sun 11am-11pm Restaurant & late bar. Probably due to its location (in a small nightspot desert between the start of east Oxford and the end of the town centre), queues at the weekend are a sure thing, a free-entrance as well. Drinks are quite expensive and service slow. But on the other side, it’s a remarkably civilized place to procure a late night drink, especially if you can get a sofa.
